Writing about Semester?
It helps us help you faster if you include:
- Your device model and iOS or iPadOS version
- Screenshots, if they’re useful
- What you were doing when the problem happened
Frequently asked questions
Is Semester the same app as Syllabus Buddy?
Yes. Semester is the new name for the app previously announced as Syllabus Buddy — same app, same team, same privacy promises.
Does Semester send my notes or syllabus to OctoSlice?
No. The app does not send your syllabi, notes, photos, recordings, flashcards, questions, or study materials to OctoSlice. Semester uses iOS frameworks and Apple Intelligence features where available. Apple services are governed by Apple’s privacy practices.
Why does the app ask me to write a sample by hand?
The handwriting sample is optional calibration. It helps the app read your photographed notes more accurately. You can redo or reset it in settings.
Can I remove a flashcard?
Yes. You can remove cards you don’t want, and the app is designed to keep the deck focused on study material rather than class logistics.
Where did an answer come from?
Semester is designed to show source references for answers and generated study material so you can check the original page, note, or document. After each capture it also counts the ideas it found — “14 ideas found, 13 became cards, 1 needs a closer look” — so nothing is skipped silently, and cards you remove are counted honestly.
How do I start a new semester?
Use the app settings to start a new semester or reset local content. Deleting the app removes local app data from the device.
Which devices does Semester support?
Any iPhone, iPad, or Mac that supports Apple Intelligence, running iOS 27 (or iPadOS/macOS 27) or later:
- iPhone 15 Pro and newer — yes
- iPad Pro (2021 and later), iPad Air (2022 and later), iPad mini (2024 and later) — yes
- Apple Silicon Macs — yes
- Standard iPad — not yet; it can’t run Apple Intelligence
Every supported device gets the same features at the same quality. On the newest hardware everything runs on-device; on other supported devices, the heaviest thinking happens on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute — built so no one, not even us, can see your material. Availability varies by language and region.
How do I report a bug or request a feature?
Email support@octoslice.com. Feature ideas from students shape what we build next.
