Privacy Policy — Semester
OctoSlice, LLC. Semester (formerly announced as Syllabus Buddy) is built around one idea: your schoolwork belongs to you. This policy explains what the app does with your information, and what it does not send to OctoSlice.
The short version. The app does not send your syllabi, notes, photos, recordings, flashcards, questions, or study materials to OctoSlice. Your material is processed on your device using iOS frameworks and Apple Intelligence. On the newest devices everything runs on-device; on other supported devices, the heaviest thinking happens on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute — engineered by Apple so that no one, not even us, can see your material. If you turn on iCloud sync, your material moves between your devices inside your own Apple account. We don’t operate servers that receive app content, and we don’t sell or share personal information. There are no accounts, ads, or analytics trackers in the app.
What the app processes on your device
- Syllabi and documents you import — including photos, PDFs, and Word files — are used to build course schedules and class facts.
- Study materials you add — photos of notes, typed notes, voice recordings, readings, and web pages you choose to import — are used to make flashcards, recaps, and answers.
- Your optional handwriting sample and corrections help the app read photographed notes more accurately. You can view, reset, or redo this profile in settings.
- Calendar items, reminders, and notifications are created from your class material and handled by iOS.
What OctoSlice collects
The app sends no app content, telemetry, or identifiers to OctoSlice. If you email support, we receive the information you choose to send and use it only to help you.
Your data, your control
You can delete app content on your device, start a new semester, factory reset the app, or delete the app to remove local data. Exported backups stay wherever you save them.
Students under 18
Semester is intended for college students, including students who may be under 18. Because app content stays on the student’s device or inside Apple’s private systems and is never sent to OctoSlice, student schoolwork does not reach us through the app.
Where the AI runs
Semester uses Apple Intelligence on your device. When a job is too heavy for your device’s on-device model, it runs on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute — Apple’s servers, engineered so your data is not stored, is not accessible to Apple staff, and is never visible to OctoSlice. Same features, same quality, on every supported device.
iCloud sync
If you sign in with the same Apple account on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, your classes and study material can sync privately through your own iCloud. Sync stays inside your Apple account — OctoSlice runs no servers and cannot see what syncs.
Apple services
Apple Intelligence and iOS services are governed by Apple’s privacy practices. Availability varies by device, language, and region.
App name
Semester was previously announced as “Syllabus Buddy.” Same app, same team, same privacy promises.
Changes to this policy
If future features change how data is handled, this policy will be updated before those features are used.
